The CPC formula

Cost per click, three ways around.

CPC is what you pay each time someone clicks an ad. Spend, clicks, and cost per click are tied together by one identity. Rearrange it for whichever value you're missing.

Solve for CPC

CPC = Ad spend ÷ Clicks

The average price paid per click across a campaign, ad set, or keyword.

Solve for clicks

Clicks = Ad spend ÷ CPC

How many clicks a budget buys at a given cost per click.

Solve for ad spend

Ad spend = Clicks × CPC

What a click target will cost at the CPC you expect.

Average CPC and max CPC are different numbers. Max CPC is the bid ceiling you set; average CPC is what you actually paid after the auction, and it is the one this calculator uses.

What CPC tells you, and what it doesn't.

CPC and CPM describe the same spend

CPM = CPC × CTR × 1,000, so a $2 CPC at a 1% click-through rate is a $20 CPM. Platforms auction on predicted engagement, which is why a higher CTR usually buys a lower CPC at the same CPM. The CPM calculator works the impression side.

A click is not a visit

Platforms count clicks; analytics tools count sessions. Accidental taps, bots, slow pages, and consent banners all open a gap between the two, so expect your landing page sessions to run below reported clicks. Judge landing pages on sessions, and judge ads on what the sessions do next.

Cheap clicks can be expensive customers

CPC is the price of attention. What matters is cost per acquisition and revenue per click. Cometly's multi-touch attribution follows each click through to pipeline and revenue, and AI Ads Manager uses that to decide which clicks are worth paying more for.

What is CPC in advertising?
CPC is cost per click, the amount an advertiser pays each time someone clicks an ad. Search ads on Google and Microsoft are billed this way, and most other platforms report an average CPC even when they bill by impression.
How do you calculate cost per click?
Divide total ad spend by the number of clicks. CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks. If you spent $5,000 and received 2,000 clicks, your CPC is 5,000 ÷ 2,000 = $2.50.
How many clicks will my budget buy?
Divide the budget by the expected cost per click. Clicks = ad spend ÷ CPC. A $1,500 budget at a $0.75 CPC buys 1,500 ÷ 0.75 = 2,000 clicks. Use your recent average CPC for the estimate, since auction prices change with competition and quality scores.
What is the difference between max CPC and average CPC?
Max CPC is the most you have told the platform you are willing to pay for a click; it is a bid, not a price. Average CPC is what you actually paid per click after the auction ran, and it is usually lower than the max. Reports, budgets, and this calculator all use average CPC.
How do I convert CPC to CPM?
Multiply the CPC by the click-through rate as a decimal, then by 1,000. CPM = CPC × CTR × 1,000. A $2.00 CPC at a 1% CTR is a $20 CPM. In the other direction, CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 1,000).
What is a good CPC?
It depends on the platform, the industry, the intent behind the keyword or audience, and how much competition is bidding on it. High-intent B2B, legal, and financial terms cost far more per click than broad consumer interests. The useful benchmark is your own history, and the useful judgement is whether the clicks turn into leads and revenue at an acceptable cost, not whether the CPC itself is low.
Why does my click count differ from my analytics sessions?
Clicks are counted by the ad platform at the moment of the click; sessions are counted by your analytics tool once the page loads and the tracking script runs. Accidental clicks, double clicks, bots, slow page loads, blocked scripts, and consent banners all cause clicks that never become sessions. A gap is normal; a sudden change in the gap is worth investigating.
Does this CPC calculator work for Google Ads, Meta, LinkedIn, and TikTok?
Yes. Spend divided by clicks is the same on every platform and in every currency. For platforms that bill by impression, the result is your effective CPC, which is still the right number for comparing channels on cost per visit.

Clicks are a cost.
Customers are the result.

Cometly follows every click through to pipeline and revenue, so you can see which campaigns earn their CPC and which only look cheap.
